May 27, 2011 - Howard County, Md. - An 11-year veteran of the Maryland State Police was killed on Saturday in a Howard County crash.
According to a report at the Baltimore Sun, the victim may have been in pursuit of a suspect when his squad car crashed on Interstate 95 in Howard County.
Police say the victim, a 39-year-old man, may have been pursuing a motorcycle around 3 a.m. on Saturday. Witnesses saw a motorcycle being pursued by a squad car around that time, and both vehicles were traveling at high speeds.
Shortly after the exit for Route 32, the victim lost control of his squad car and crashed into a semi-truck that was stopped on the shoulder. Police say the trooper had not radioed for backup, so it is currently unclear if the chase actually took place.
The Maryland State Police are launching an investigation into the death, and they are looking for the motorcyclist in addition to any witnesses who saw the accident. Police have only said that the motorcyclist was wearing a white helmet, but the make and model of the motorcycle have not been released.
The victim worked for the Maryland State Police for 11 years. He leaves behind 6 children. His funeral was to be held at the New Antioch Baptist Church in Randallstown.
