August 19, 2011 - Baltimore, Md. - A man who was involved in a fatal hit and run last year has recently been sentenced to 15 years in prison, with another 15 years for dealing heroin.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Umar Burley, 40, pleaded guilty for vehicle homicide, early in the month at the city circuit court and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The 2- vehicle car collision happened last year on the Northwest side of Baltimore. Elbert Davis, 86, was killed in the crash. Burley fled the scene of the accident on foot.
Police then found dealer amounts of heroin in Burley's abandoned vehicle. On Thursday, August 18, 2011, Burley was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for heroin distribution.
The pair of 15-year sentences in prison will run concurrently, according to Burley's plea deal. This means that Burley will be serving a total of 15 years for both sentences, as opposed to serving his sentences consecutively, which would have left him in prison for 30 years.
A passenger in Burley's vehicle at the time of the accident, Brent Matthews, 37, also pleaded guilty to distributing heroin. His sentencing will take place next month in the U.S. District court.
