Fatal Baltimore Motorcycle Crash Diverts Orioles Game Traffic

April 8, 2011 - Baltimore, MD - A 23-year old man was killed on April 4 when he crashed his motorcycle along I-395 in Baltimore, near the merge with I-95.

According to reports from CBS Baltimore, the fatal Baltimore motorcycle crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m., as traffic was leaving the Orioles game. As a result, southbound traffic along 395 and northbound traffic along 95 was diverted.

While the Maryland Transportation Authority Police did not release the name of the man, they said no other vehicles were involved. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Jonathan Green with the Transportation Authority police said. The article did not state whether the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

While fatal motorcycle accidents may not be as common in Maryland as in some other states, they still occur, nonetheless. According to 2009 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists accounted for approximately 69 of the state's 547 fatalities that year alone.

While it's a drop from the state's most recent high of 96 motorcyclist fatalities in 2007, the number is still a cause for concern. In 2009, motorcyclists within the victim's age range (20 to 29 years) accounted for 15 of the total motorcycle fatalities.
