May 31, 2011 - Baltimore, Md. - An elderly woman who caused a bike accident in Baltimore earlier this year has escaped jail time or a hefty fine due to a recent court decision.
According to a report at the Baltimore Sun, the driver was found to be negligent in the accident, which left a Johns Hopkins University student in a permanent coma.
The charges stem from an accident on Feb. 26, 2011. Police say the driver, an 83-year-old woman, was driving on University Drive near Johns Hopkins University when she pulled in front of a cyclist who was riding in a designated bike lane.
The accident left the victim, a university student, with serious personal injuries. He has been in a coma since February, and while he shows some brain activity, doctors say he will likely never recover or awaken from this coma.
The driver pleaded guilty to a variety of charges, including failing to yield to and negligent driving. She paid a $220 fine and wasn't required to appear in court. The victim's family is outraged at the small fine and is suing the driver for $10 million in a personal injury lawsuit. The outcome of that lawsuit has not yet been settled.
