June 16, 2011 - Baltimore, Md. - According to a report at WBAL Baltimore, a deputy with the Harford County Sheriff's Office was treated at a Baltimore hospital after he was seriously injured by a drunk driver on Wednesday, around 2:30 a.m.
Investigators say the deputy was on duty and riding in his squad car on Route 152. Meanwhile, a 21-year-old man from Edgewood was speeding and lost control of his vehicle before crashing into a concrete barrier and slamming into the deputy's squad car near the intersection of Route 152 and Route 40.
The squad car sustained severe damage during the accident, and it took first responders nearly an hour to extricate the deputy from the mangled wreckage. The deputy, identified as a 26-year-old man, was airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma Hospital with serious injuries. Authorities say he was stabilized and released later that day.
The driver who caused this accident wasn't injured in the crash; however, investigators say he was drunk when he lost control of his vehicle, and he has been arrested. He's now facing several charges, including driving under the influence, speeding, and reckless driving.
