May 6, 2011 - Glen Burnie, Md. - A crossing guard was seriously injured on Wednesday when she was hit by a school bus while helping students cross a busy road. According to a report at the Baltimore Sun, the driver of the school bus will likely face charges in this crash.
The Glen Burnie accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday as students were making their way to Point Pleasant Elementary School in Glen Burnie.
The crossing guard, a 54-year-old woman, was standing in the crosswalk on Furnace Avenue when she was hit by the bus, which had just turned onto Furnace from Sunny Brook Avenue. The victim suffered serious personal injuries, and she is currently receiving treatment at Maryland Shock Trauma Hospital. Although her specific injuries are not known at this time, authorities say she is in serious condition.
The driver of the school bus, a 53-year-old woman, will likely face charges of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Authorities do not believe she was speeding.
The bus was carrying four elementary students at the time of the accident, but none of the children were injured. The school has provided grief counselors for the students who witnessed the accident.
