Car Plunges Off Beltway in Baltimore

May 4, 2011 - Baltimore, Maryland - A Maryland driver is lucky to be alive after a car plunged off a Beltway bridge on Monday night. According to a report at the Baltimore Sun, the accident took place shortly before 11 p.m. on Monday evening.

The Maryland State Police is still investigating this serious crash, but they believe that the victim was driving on Interstate 695 near Baltimore when he or she lost control of the vehicle and crashed over the side of the bridge near Route 702. The car landed on railroad tracks that travel underneath the Beltway Bridge.

First responders were on the scene in minutes and managed to extricate the victim from the damaged vehicle. The victim was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with unknown injuries. He or she has not been identified, and police had no word on the victim's current condition.

Police have not said what caused the victim to lose control of the vehicle, and it is not known if inclement weather or alcohol played a role in the crash. No other vehicles were involved and no additional injuries were reported. More information will be added if and when it becomes available.
