Baltimore Firefighter Gets Probation in DUI Crash that Injured Two

May 3, 2011 - Baltimore, Md. - A Baltimore firefighter who injured two people in a DUI crash last year has been sentenced to 2 years of probation. According to a report at the Baltimore Sun, the driver escaped jail time because of his clean driving record and lack of any previous run-ins with the law.

The charges stem from a serious crash in April 2010. Investigators say the driver, a 30-year-old man who has served in the Baltimore Fire Department for 5 years, was driving on Frederick Road when he crossed the median and swerved into oncoming traffic.

He crashed head-on into a Ford Taurus with 5 passengers, including 3 children under the age of 10. The driver of the Taurus, the children's mother, suffered the most serious injuries, including several broken bones in her hip and pelvis. Her 10-year-old son was disfigured by facial injuries. Both victims were hospitalized for extended periods.

An investigation determined that the firefighter had a blood-alcohol content of 0.16, which is well above the legal limit of 0.08 in Maryland. He will now be on probation for 2 years, although he has resumed a normal work schedule with the Baltimore Fire Department.
