Anne Arundel County Head-On Accident Ends in Death and Injury

October 10, 2011 - Anne Arundel County, Md. - A head-on accident left a man dead and another seriously injured on Friday, October 7.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the accident happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the intersection of where Route 258 and Nutwell Sudley Road meet. Police said that a Chevrolet Impala was driving on the roadway when it veered into the opposite lane of traffic and into the path of an oncoming Ford truck. The 2 vehicles crashed head-on.

The Impala's driver, John Leonard Lonigan, 20, of Deale, was killed in the accident. He died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, Donald August Applekamp Jr., 55, was seriously injured in the accident and had to be flown to the Prince George's County Trauma Center.

According to investigators, Lonigan may have been attempting to program his GPS at the time of the accident. They also said that excessive speed was a primary factor in the crash.
