17 Injured in Centreville Bus Accident on Route 213

May 13, 2011 - Centreville, Md. - A total of 17 people were injured on Thursday when a bus carrying kindergarten students overturned in Centreville.

According to a report at the Baltimore Sun, the charter bus was transporting students from a kindergarten class at Worton Elementary School in Kent County. The students were on a field trip to the National Zoo in Washington D.C.

Maryland State Police say the bus was traveling southbound on Route 213 near Centreville when a Volkswagen Toureg SUV made a left turn into the path of the bus around 9 a.m.

The bus driver swerved to avoid hitting the SUV, which caused the bus to drive onto the shoulder and crash into a pole. The force from the collision caused the bus to overturn.

Pictures from the Centreville bus accident scene show a variety of first responders treating injured victims, who are lying on stretchers in a grassy field. Seventeen people were injured, including at least 10 children.

Most of the victims were transported to local hospitals throughout the region, including Annapolis and Easton. The driver of the SUV also suffered personal injuries.

Fortunately, none of the injuries were classified as life threatening. The bus driver, an 86-year-old man from Still Pond, declined medical treatment at the scene of the crash. The driver is the owner of Dorsey Transportation, the charter outfit that was handling the transport for the field trip. Police continue to investigate the accident.
